Choices according to Anubism: why are there only wrong choices?

In the previous article we saw how our condition can almost always be changed...

We have just seen how our condition can almost always be changed and is, in a way, the result of choices or non-choices.

Since many adepts wonder how to make the right choice (or worship Anubis over past choices), let us tackle the subject and try to cut down on the adorations.

A few considerations:

The use of statistics and historical data: since the future is unknown, all we can do is rely on statistics and probabilities to guide our choices.

However, statistics too are based on past events and cannot guarantee that future results will be the same.

The point might be that a “rational” decision is based on data, but even statistically sound decisions can turn out badly.

One example is the financial markets, where even choices based on historical analysis often fail because of unforeseen events.

“Good” or “bad” choices depend on time and context: what looks like a good choice today may turn out bad in the long run, or vice versa.

Judging choices is relative: the “goodness” or “badness” of a choice is fundamentally subjective.

What is good for one person or group may not be for another.

Ethical or moral decisions vary across cultures and contexts.

The role of emotions and personal ethics: choices, and how we judge them afterwards, cannot be separated from emotions and personal ethics.

Nobody can decide which choice is best in absolute terms; it depends on what gives each person a sense of peace.

A sense of peace is one of the benefits.

Given what we have to work with, the right choice simply does not exist.

One person might devote himself to work and success, only to end up in prison one day.

Another might decide to devote himself to his family, only to find himself one day cheated on and hated by his children. That's life.

What we call “choices” today should really be called “bets”.

Is there such a thing as the “right bet”? No.

When someone tells the Adept that he has made the wrong choices in life, he will simply reply that all he could do was choose among the infinite wrong choices available to him.

All we can do is always do our best while respecting the second precept, known as “don't bust anyone's balls”, which obviously includes not attacking and not doing harm.

As long as we avoid adding to the notorious global shittiness of the world, whatever we have done as best we could, even if it doesn't seem to bring the expected results, will still have a great value that will become clear to us only with time.

In the end, every choice is just another bet on the dark table of life, where Anubis keeps us company only to remind us that everything is transient.

“All decisions are a leap in the dark.” Attributed to William James.

May Anubis help you not to worship him over the “wrong choice”: you could have done far worse.
